A Japanese urban legend, Kuchisake-onna is said to be the ghost of a woman with her mouth slit ear to ear. She approaches people at night, asking, “Am I pretty?” If they answer “no,” she kills them; if they answer “yes,” she reveals her wound and may mutilate them to look like her. The tale, with roots in older ghost stories, spread panic in Japan in the late 1970s and remains one of the country’s most enduring modern myths.
