We’re heading to the plains to do battle with an intergalactic hunter in BIRD PROTOCOL’s first official sequel episode on Dan Trachtenberg’s new sci-fi action movie “Prey”! This movie is, as one critic put it, “simple but not simplistic” and we couldn’t agree more. It friggin’ rules. Trachtenberg breathes new life into what was becoming a stale franchise by taking the Predator story back to its roots and delivering a fun, well-made, and brutal story about hunters of all types. Plus, the practical effects are incredible, the Predator is frightening, and the battle isn’t as one-sided as you think (which smartly adds to the tension). This movie is historically accurate, filled with smart writing and character development, and might be as good as the original. Actually.
Starring Amber Midthunder, Dakota Beavers, Dane DiLiegro, Michelle Thrush, Stormee Kipp, and a selection of other (mostly) Indigenous and First Nation actors and available in full Comanche language as well as English… this one has it all. Action, tension, great visuals, a taut story, and an alien kicking ass (and also having his ass kicked). There’s a lot to love with this prequel and we break it all down. We share our thoughts about the film, unpack some of the problems of the Predator franchise of late, discuss people hating on stuff online for dumb reasons, share some of our favourite moments from “Prey”, applaud the writing and overall smartness of the film, and generally gush about how much this movie rules.
We’re so stoked that this movie is as good as it is and are happy that other people (critics and moviegoers alike) seem to share our sentiment. If you haven’t seen this movie, go see it. And don’t listen to the people online complaining about it because everything in this movie works so, so well and just makes sense. It’s truly what this franchise needed and other franchises/studios should take notes. Enough with the Predators who want to steal and weaponize autism stuff. Seriously. What we’re ya’ll thinking? We also discuss what other historic periods we’d like to see the Predator show up in and pitch some ideas for other Predator movies, discuss how this film deals with gender roles really well, and more Predator-related ramblings.
Otis has a surprise for y’all next week while PALMREADER is away… then we’re hitting one of his all-time favourites for his birthday and staying in the realm of extraterrestrial freaks. Get ready for James Cameron’s “Aliens”.
