Episode 73: Leave a Hook in the Water

Listen Later

This past week I was on a fishing excursion in Alaska.  What an incredible trip!

We saw a little bit of everything and always seemed to be in the right place in the right time.

I can confidently say that we caught more fish than any other group at the lodge.  In total, our team of six hauled in more than 1200 pounds of fish from Tuesday to Saturday.

That isn’t meant to be a brag, but rather, highlight something we did extremely well.  We consistently were one of the first boats to leave and last to come back to the lodge.  More importantly, every time we caught a fish we worked as a team to get the hook back in the water as fast as possible.

There are so many epic experiences from this trip that I could share this week, but I think the key takeaway can be summed up from what the head of the lodge said on the first day we got there,

“If you want to catch a fish you need to keep a hook in the water.”

From that standpoint maybe we weren’t necessarily “in the right place at the right time”, but rather, maximized our opportunity for success.

Life is all about taking advantage of opportunities, and the more opportunities you get the better chance of success you have.

Our group was certainly not the most skilled anglers in the lodge, not by a long shot.  However, we maximized our opportunities by maximizing our time on the water and always having a hook in the water.

So this week know that there are opportunities swimming all around you, but have to keep a hook in the water if you want to catch a fish.
