The entire process of nature and is an integrated process of immense complexity. Therefore, it is impossible to tell whether anything that happens in it is good or bad because you never know what the consequences of good or bad fortune will be.
We often are looking at an isolated event at a singular point in time. This prevents us from having perspective. Events that seem bad today may come to define us, but we just don’t know it yet because we haven’t had enough time to let it play out.
This brings me to a quote from Confucius who said, “As the water shapes itself to the vessel that contains it, so a wise man adapts himself to circumstances.”
This is similar to a quote from John Wooden that I us all the time, “Things work out best for those who make the best of they way things work out.”
I know that there are people out there that find this difficult to believe.
Maybe your girlfriend or boyfriend broke up with you and you just feel like nothing is going your way. In this moment things seem difficult. However, when you look back on this day 10-years from now while you are on your honey moon with the love of your life you will be grateful.
Just as in the story, what seems bad today only seems bad because of the lack of perspective.
So today, whatever you are going through. Remember to be like the Chinese Farmer. Whatever is happening for you in your life, it is nearly impossible at this moment with limited perspective to associate it being good or bad.
All you can do today is focus on what is in your control and make the best of whatever hand you were dealt. I promise you that one day when you look back, you will see the event differently with the benefit of time and perspective.
