What is success?
The story of the Mexican fisherman reminds me of one of my favorite Tony Robbins quotes, “Success is doing what you want to do, when you want, where you want, and with whom you want, as much as you want.”
I have yet to hear of a better definition of success, so this is the one I use personally.
In the story the investment banker doesn’t think the fisherman is successful because he is basing success on money. However, the banker would have the fisherman toil away his entire life to end up doing the exact same thing he is doing now.
This week ask yourself, what are you working towards? You can’t just say, “being happy.” You need to be specific! What would make you happy. Write it down.
The older I get the more I appreciate this story. If you are working towards money then don’t be surprised when you achieve it and still are not happy.
In fact, they say that money can’t buy happiness. That doesn’t keep everyone from wanting to find out for themselves though does it?
I say instead, work towards freedom. Freedom to do what you want, when you want, where you want, with whom you want, as much as you want.
Don’t spend your life putting off living until retirement. Like the Mexican fisherman, find what makes you happy and start doing more of that today. That is true success.
