In modern times, most of us can satisfy our needs of the "shadow" within, via horror flicks, symbolic religious experience, or other safe approaches to exercise our more archaic parts of self. In this continued series, we dive further into our correspondence with the fragmented fantasy-come-reality of Dennis Rader, a.k.a. the notorious BTK serial killer. Freud spoke of maturing as the adaptation to "reality" and the inhibition of the "pleasure-principle." These he felt are accomplished by biding one's time and making various resignations, and by finding "sublimations," socially acceptable releases of tension. In the case of BTK, this was obviously not the case. Journey with me to better understand what happens when successful maturing falls on its face.
