Silva and Gold

Episode 8: Surreal Racism

Listen Later

Every week on Silva & Gold, it seems some form of racism always appears in the films we watch and review. We figured we should just go ahead and cover a couple that tackle such themes head on by dressing people up in ridiculous costumes, throwing pies, inflating giant dragons, etc. Just your run of the mill, everyday spoofs!

First we discuss DARKTOWN STRUTTERS from 1975. Imagine an episode of Fat Albert, only the problem the kids have is a Colonel Sanders look-alike villain who has pig henchmen and a giant KKK biker gang at his disposal.

Next is a war/imperialism/USA/capitalism-protest film from 1969 called MR. FREEDOM, a “a pro-American Right superhero who fights for God and country by beating, robbing, and killing anyone who looks like they might disagree with him.” And by look, I’m sure that means “not white.”

We fall off the tracks perhaps more than usual this week, so get ready for a long mess.

Hey, it’s free! What can you do?
