Episode #80—Christians and Absolutes: When Certainty Becomes a Problem

Listen Later

Christians can never take medication. It is always wrong to interrupt a worship service. Capital punishment is an absolute wrong under any circumstances. These sorts of absolutes flood certain segments of the Christian church, but how helpful are they? This week, Tommie and Doug tackle the nature, and some examples, of absolute statements as they explore the possibility of certainty becoming a problem.

Affirming that some absolutes are biblically warranted, they warn that others, often asserted confidently, can become harmful when they go beyond what Scripture teaches. While Christians do live in the realm of absolutes, we need to be absolutely certain our “absolute” is truly biblical. Christians should never turn personal convictions, cultural preferences, or fear-driven conclusions into divine law. That’s where the trouble begins.

Absolute statements can be powerful—but only when they are truly grounded in Scripture. Christians must work hard to avoid misinterpreting biblical texts, turning preferences into commands, binding consciences unnecessarily, and speaking with certainty where the Bible is not certain. When a Christian makes an “absolute” claim and attaches God’s authority to it, the stakes become very high. The solution isn’t abandoning certainty. It’s submitting certainty to Scripture, with humility, wisdom, and care for others.
