Episode 81: Live Abundantly

Listen Later

Live abundantly . . .

I wear a bracelet that I made that says “grateful”. It was part of an exercise we did with our kids last Thanksgiving where we asked each other questions to find a word that defined us.

People ask me all the time in my business who my competitors are. Anyone who knows me knows I will say “no one”. While there are companies like ours, I don’t think any of them do exactly what we do or as well as we do it.

I have a history of working with competitors. I was discussing this on stage during a live podcast interview at the end of the largest renewables conference in the world last week.

It made me reflect on what I see that others don’t. And I think it comes down to this quote from Tony Robbins, who said,

“When you are grateful, fear disappears and abundance appears.”

I don’t fear competition, it is good for business. Good for innovation, and growth. The author Jim Collins would call it “productive paranoia”.

I also approach life in general with an abundance mindset. If the entire industry does well the pie grows. That is good for all of us.

When you analyze your competitors, what do they do well compared to what you do well? There must be a gap. In that gap you will find opportunity.

I firmly believe that opportunity is all around us. Everyone we meet, everyone we talk to. There is almost always a way to learn, grow, or problem solve together.

So I encourage you this week to think about how you can work with or add value to competitors. At the very least, this exercise will reveal your competitive advantage.
