Episode 81: Setting the record clear (Chicanismo)

Guest: Dr. Aimee Villarreal

In this episode Dr. Aimee Villarreal & Rick answer questions about Chicanismo & critiques of Chicano academia.

Questions answered by DR. Villarreal:

- What is Chicanismo?

- Who could be considered Chicano?

- What is Chicana feminism?

- How important was it for Chicana feminists to challenge toxic masculinity and machismo within Chicano academia & Chicano grassroots? Who are some early Chicana feminists that challenged early Chicano machismo?

- What are some current important topics within Chicanismo that you feel are not being addressed? But should.

- What are some misconceptions about Chicanos/Chicanismo, that you have heard?

Questions answered by Rick:

- What's wrong about taking an ancestry DNA test, and claiming Indigeneity? (Without any connection to an Indigenous community).

- Aren't I Indigenous, since I'm brown? (Claiming Indigeneity through phenotypes).

- What is wrong if I claim Indigeneity? (Without knowing if I'm Indigenous). I’m not claiming a [federally/state] recognized tribe, how is it infringing on tribal sovereignty?

- Why can’t we ("detribalized") nip-pick pieces of different Indigenous communities' cultures, and create our own Decolonization path? What's wrong with that?

- Why can't the U.S. recognize Indigenous south of the border?

- Aren't Mexicans more Indigenous than Indigenous peoples in the US, because Indigenous in the US 'white', and Indigenous in Mexico have a higher 'blood quantum'.

- Isn't Rick a Chicano?

- Why is misappropriation of Indigeneity within Chicanismo an important topic for you?
