In business and life, I strive to be a person of action. Instead of talking about what I want to do, I just go for it and let the results do the talking.

Still, it never hurts to be your own biggest cheerleader. After all, if you don’t do it who else will?

The same is true for appreciation. What I mean by that is it never hurts to back up your action with words.

Sometimes I find myself in a position where I don’t express my gratitude for something because it is maybe perceived as “expected”. I believe the underlying thought is that this is what you are supposed to do so why do you require adulation? I liken it to everyone getting a participation trophy, which I am not a fan of.

However, just because it is expected doesn’t mean I am not grateful. I just find that there are words and then there is action.

Throughout my life I have learned that far too often action and words do not always match up. I avoid these people at all cost. They will tell you whatever you want to hear on one hand, and are doing the opposite with the other.

That lead me to this quote from JFK who said, 

“As we express our gratitude, we must never forget that the highest appreciation is not to utter words, but to live by them.”

Actions speak louder than words, but I have to keep reminding myself that doesn’t mean you can’t use words too.

Ultimately, your actions show your true intentions. This is of the utmost importance. However, as long as you words are aligned with your actions there is no reason that you can’t tell someone how much you appreciate what they are doing. Even if it is expected. After all, how would you feel if the expected didn’t happen?

This week make sure you tell someone in your life how much you appreciate them. It could be a relative, coworker, or friend. Even though you live by your actions, sometimes it is nice to backup your actions with words.
