The COVID-19 intensive care unit at San Antonio’s Northeast Baptist Hospital is for the sickest of the sick. It’s a place of ventilators, breathing tubes and elaborate protective gear. For nurses, the night shift is long stretches of quiet punctuated by crisis. Express-News reporter Lauren Caruba and photographer Bob Owen spent two nights alongside them. They tell us what it was like behind the scenes of the story.
