Text: John 1:5 (ESV)
“The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.”
Reflection
Light is not decorative—it is disruptive. Light exposes what thrives in secrecy. Jesus does not merely comfort the suffering; he reveals the truth about the systems that create suffering. When light shines, excuses collapse. Silence is no longer possible.
Societal Lens
Darkness today is found in policies that criminalize existence, in enforcement agencies that operate without accountability, and in rhetoric that dehumanizes whole communities. ICE abuses do not persist because people do not know—they persist because too many refuse to see. But the light keeps shining, and the truth keeps demanding a response.
Spiritual Practice
Identify one injustice you have been avoiding because it feels “too political” or uncomfortable. Pray—and then act. Speak, write, show up, or support those directly impacted. Light requires participation, not observation.
Conversation Questions
Prayer
Light of Truth, expose what harms and embolden what heals. Strip away our comfort where it competes with compassion. Make us brave enough to stand where Your light stands. Amen.
