Eleanor Roosevelt said, “Today is the oldest you’ve ever been, and the youngest you’ll ever be again.”
I know I struggle with being present. Honestly, it seems to be an epidemic. When we are with friends and family we are still so distant. Often starting at our phones for the latest updates instead of spending the most valuable resource with each other, our time.
In this virtual world it is so easy to get caught up with work, games, social media, news, etc.
So here are a few tips that I have found to be more present.
1) Immerse yourself in every activity. Embrace moments in life by making a conscience effort to be an active participant. This could be as easy as keeping score during your kids baseball game, or taking time to literally stop and smell the roses.
2) Focus on the process. I often say the journey is the reward. Instead of worrying about the future, put more effort into your current situation. Although it may seem counterintuitive, I found that planning LESS during a trip or activity can really help me focus on what is happening now instead of marching from one scheduled activity to the next.
3) Put the phone down. Turn off notifications. I have been using “do not disturb” frequently and I love it. Not only is it great if I am spending time with the family, but this has been a huge help keeping me focused during meetings as well.
4) Journal. Preparing my Monday podcast is healing. It also gives me time all throughout the week to focus on the positive and find things for which I am grateful. The sense of gratitude helps me embrace the present.
5) Meditate. Admittedly, I have had an odd journey with my own meditation. It wasn’t until recently that I started taking ice baths, and I have really enjoyed the process. It keeps me grounded, focused, and is perfect time to be present with no outside distractions.
