Episode 87: Interview With Tim Banks

Listen Later

Ashleigh’s coworker at Duckbill Group, Tim Banks, talks to Ashleigh and Sunanda about the sales engineering world, burnout, and being a person of color in tech.

SHOW NOTES

His Sales Journey

-Tim is a systems engineer by trade but got his start in sales while at a company called Object Rocket. At this company, he started to join sales calls where he both answered technical questions and gathered insight that helped build the product.

Burnout

-There is far too much focus on numbers in the operations and sales worlds. This hyper-fixation of numbers is why so many people leave these industries. Tim left to become a chef for some time.

Being Coin-Operated

-It is okay to be motivated by money. Do not allow companies to take advantage of you. You should be compensated for your work.

Being a Person of Color in Tech

-When Tim first began in tech everyone was preparing for Y2K. Being Black in the 90s tech world meant you could identify with few people. So, Tim learned to codeswitch.
