For my generation this was THE high school movie.  Early in his career, John Hughes spent several movies delving into the strange social dynamics of high school, most of the time with comedy.  This time he set out to take the concerns of teenagers a lot more seriously.  Whether or not it translates to the current generation is not for me to say.  Luckily I've got a 14 year old who has opinions.
