Episode 89 - The Little Things (Be Thankful)

Listen Later

I went on a run today with my brother, in the cold and pouring rain.  It occurred to me while we were running that it was three years ago the pain started.

The pain that ultimately led to me having to have surgery on my lower back.

I was training for the Houston marathon with my brother this same week three years ago when lightening bolts down my leg started to become something that couldn’t be ignored.

Little did I know that in four months I would require surgery so I could do just about anything.

As we head into Thanksgiving remember this quote from American novelist Cynthia Ozick who said, “We often take for granted the very things that most deserve our gratitude.”

As we were running today my mind started to wonder back.  Back to when I couldn’t sit down long enough to eat dinner with my family, back to when I couldn’t walk down the stairs, back to when I couldn't even put my shoes on.

Of course most of us are thankful for the easy things like food, shelter, family . . . However, don’t overlook the small things.

Just being able to sit down to enjoy a meal with family is a privilege.

Being able to walk and run again is something I try not to take for granted.

So this week, ask yourself what little things you take for granted every day.  The little things that get overlooked, but you should be thankful for.

I hope everyone can enjoy this week with family in warm houses and with full bellies.  Most of all I pray that you don’t take anything for granted, live life to the fullest, and be present.  You are blessed.
