The Hybrid Cloud Forecast Series

Episode 9: The Hybrid Cloud Forecast - Outlook: The Platform

Listen Later

In this episode of the Hybrid Cloud Forecast series, Andre talks to Mike Kaczmarski, IBM Fellow, CTO Cloud Pak Shared Services, about the Cloud Pak platform-operator.  They discuss that biggest difference cloud has made is design patterns - making it easier and more ubiquitous to scale workloads across geographies, and resources.  Andre and Mike talk about how having a platform makes it easy for a customer to pick capabilities, but also abstract other things such as workload placement, load balancing and automation and how the platform brings other non-functional requirements for free. By using the platform, customers can easily integrate different capabilities  into modern cloud environments and focus on writing applications as opposed to trying to glue all the pieces together. Mike also talks about using gitops and automation to deploy environments that are repeatable, governed, and managed, where customers can take the deployment artifacts and use them across environments and releases to test and deploy.  Andre and Mike discuss how some customers like to run highly sensitive workloads on-premise, but other customers are moving capabilities to the cloud to take advantage of the economies of scale and pricing on the cloud - written on top of our platform those capabilities would be a lot easier to move to the cloud.
They discuss the important traits of a platform - footprint, consistency for customers, integration and ability to share services.
