Episode 90: Show Appreciation

Listen Later

Research shows that when you make someone feel appreciated it helps them feel validated and seen. This is what connects us as humans.

Showing appreciation and gratitude is also proven to improve physical and mental health in a variety of ways such as: improved sleep, lower blood pressure, boosted self-confidence, improved patience, reduced jealousy, increased optimism, and less depression.

Not only does showing appreciation improve your own mood, but it also boosts the mood of the person who feels appreciated.

French Philosopher, Voltaire, said it this way,  "Appreciation is a wonderful thing: it makes what is excellent in others belong to us as well."

A compliment rooted in truth lets people they know that they matter, and are making a difference.

In a work setting these simple acts of appreciation will help boost morale, engagement, productivity, and retention. In fact “lack of appreciation” is often among the top reasons that people leave their jobs, not pay.

Here are five simple tips to make others feel more appreciated.

1) Actively Listen
2) Send Thank You Notes
3) Shine a Light on Someone; Be Specific
4) Make Connections
5) Offer Help
