For the fifth and final episode of the 1930s Science Fiction podcast, we end on another SF-horror crossover the classic novella by H.P. Lovecraft At the Mountains of Madness. While this remains one of the complicated horror master’s enduring classics. Written in 1931 the story was rejected by Weird Tales based on the length in 1936 it was published in three issues of Astounding magazine.
I am joined by two Lovecraft experts. Cody Goodfellow is the Wonderland award-winning novelist and long-time host of the popular Cthulhu prayer breakfasts held at the Lovecraft-inspired festivals on each coast. Fred Lubnow is a scientist who does the blog Lovecraftian science.
In this episode, we talk about Lovecraft’s life, with a warts and all look at his biography. The history of weird tales and the rejection of the novella, the history of Astounding getting the classic tale, and then we break down the story itself.
