Here are four things a Manager can do with their team to leverage the power of small wins to accomplish big goals.
- Establish a positive climate, one event at a time. By taking a practical approach to problems and their causes with a coordinated plan of action you can give subordinates a sense of forward movement even when roadblocks occur.
- Stay tuned into your teams everyday activities and progress. In a nonjudgmental climate this will naturally occur where team members will update you without being asked.
- Target support according to recent events. Try to anticipate what type of intervention would have the most impact on the team. Wether it is removal of an inhibitor, sharing good news, or just asking how you can help impact progress.
- Establish yourself as a resource for team members. Don’t be a micromanager. Micromanagers fail to allow autonomy, ask subordinates about their work without offering any help, are quick to assign blame when problems arise, and hoard information for their own benefit. Instead, effective managers are able to check in on employees while never seeming to check up on them.
