Episode 93 - Thunderstorm Asthma

In this episode, Georgie tells Alice and Emma about the thunderstorm asthma phenomenon, which led to the deaths of 10 people in Melbourne.


[⁠⁠⁠⁠⁠⁠⁠Inquest: Omar Moujalled⁠⁠⁠⁠⁠⁠⁠]

Omar developed breathing difficulty at 6pm. Despite using his inhaler, symptoms persisted. His mother drove him to their medical practice where paramedics attended, but he suffered cardiac arrest and was pronounced deceased at 7:10pm.

[⁠Inquest: Hope Carnevali⁠]

Hope developed symptoms after arriving home at 5:30pm. An ambulance call at 6:28 was answered at 6:32. She deteriorated, suffered cardiac arrest, and a Priority 0 ambulance arrived at 7:03pm. She was pronounced deceased before hospital arrival.

[⁠Inquest: Min Guo⁠]

Min presented to ED at 8:28pm after 3 hours of shortness of breath. The overwhelmed ED had run out of salbutamol and had to seek additional supplies from a local chemist. He was treated and discharged, but continued to suffer episodes until a fatal asthma attack on 9 December 2016.

[⁠Inquest: Apollo George Papadopoulos⁠]

Apollo was reported to have used his puffer multiple times at work. By evening, severe symptoms led his mother to call 000 at 6:50pm. An ambulance arrived at 7:16pm, but he suffered cardiac arrest around arrival and was declared deceased shortly after hospital admission. The closest local hospital was just 4 kilometres away.

[⁠Inquest: Clarence Leo]

Clarence went to bed as usual, but woke at 4:40am with symptoms and ran out of his puffer. While seeking more, he worsened and suffered cardiac arrest in his car before ambulance arrival. Despite paramedic and fire brigade care, he was declared deceased before hospital transport.

[⁠Inquest: Le Hue Huynh]

Le developed symptoms at 4pm worsening by 6pm. On arrival at ED she was in cardiac arrest. Le was admitted to the Intensive Care Unit and care was continued until Le passed away on the 24th of January 2017. [⁠Inquest: Ling-Ling Ang⁠]

By about 6pm, Ling-Ling began experiencing difficulty breathing. She was driven to her local medical clinic which was less than 5 minutes away from her home. She suffered cardiac arrest en route. Emergency services were called at 6:28, answered at at 6:32pm and an ambulance arrived at 6:42. Despite resuscitation, she deteriorated in ICU and passed away on 25 November.

[⁠Inquest: Hoi Sam Lau]

Prescribed antibiotics and steroids for a cough the week prior, he collapsed after breathing difficulty at 6:30pm. After difficulty connecting with Emergency Services and ambulance was dispatched and arrived at 7:10pm. Hoi was transferred to hospital and admitted to the Intensive Care Unit but deteriorated over the following days and passed away on the 29th of November.

[⁠Inquest: Minh Thao La]

Minh developed breathing difficulty at 6:10pm, for which Emergency Services were called. A second call was made when Minh stopped breathing. CPR was performed and a fire brigade crew were the first to arrive at 7:40pm, prior to a medical team at 7:59pm. Minh was transferred to hospital where he deteriorated over the next few days and he passed away on the 26th of November.

[⁠Inquest: Priyantha Nirmale Ranjith Peiris]

After outdoor activity preparing for the storm, Priyantha developed breathing difficulty. Emergency Services were called at 6:20, answered at 6:23, his family were informed an ambulance was on its way during this call. Priyantha collapsed around 6:30pm. Paramedics arrived at 6:50pm. Despite resuscitation and ICU admission, he passed away on the 29th of November.
