Episode 98: Act or Be Acted Upon

Listen Later

This weekend I was hanging out with a self-made business investor and advisor in the mountains somewhere in Utah.  We where sharing stories and I was trying to learn as much as I could during our short time together.

He was telling me about some advice he gave to the high school football team he coaches.  And it was this simple.

“It is better to act than to be acted upon.”

People who act build, create, and inspire.

People who are acted upon procrastinate and are unproductive.  They also make excuses for not taking action or why things didn’t or won’t work out.

Here is the difference between the two types of people:

Someone who takes action might say, “There is opportunity in this poor economy to start a business that can help people.”

While someone who is being acted upon would say, “I can’t start a business in this poor economy.”

Another example is in retirement.  Most people have the simple goal of accumulating enough wealth so they can do nothing (retire).  They will consume their resources until they are gone.  In this case they are an object to be acted upon.

Meanwhile, the rare elite choose to act.  They accumulate enough money to create opportunities for others while also learning and growing themselves.  These individuals have an abundance mentality and give back through their tireless efforts.

This week know that the choice is yours, and it is your responsibility to act.  Otherwise, like an ostrich with its head stuck in the sand, you will surely be acted upon.

As a post note:  If you want to take action and don’t know where to start then check out #58:  "The Art of Doing”.  In this episode I outline five simple steps to avoid procrastination and take action.
