On this week's episode, we are joined by Grant Alvis from Richmond, Virginia. Grant is a fly-fishing guide with a particular affinity for two species that are often mistaken for one another, the Northern Snakehead and the Bowfin. The former is a recent addition to the Chesapeake Bay Watershed, illegally introduced to Maryland waters in the early 2000's. Since that time, it has spread to various river systems up and down the Bay. The latter is one of the oldest surviving fish species on Earth, described as a living fossil, and has been native to the region since before the Chesapeake Bay itself was formed. We'll go into how you can target both of these species, as well as why the Bowfin may just become your new favorite species to catch on the fly.
