In this episode of the In Strides Podcast, we sit down with Laura Grier, an extraordinary individual who has carved a unique path as an adventure photographer, photo anthropologist, travel writer, and social impact entrepreneur. With an impressive record of visiting 87 countries and all 7 continents, Laura's life has been a remarkable journey filled with exploration and cultural immersion.
From an early age, Laura's upbringing as the daughter of parents working for the CIA exposed her to a global perspective. This upbringing instilled in her a love for travel and a deep curiosity about different cultures. After completing a dual degree in Photojournalism and Art Photography at Syracuse University, Laura founded Beautiful Day Photography in Los Angeles in 2003. Specializing in destination weddings and events, she was able to combine her passion for photography with her desire to see the world.
During her extensive travels, Laura realized the importance of capturing and sharing the stories of the people and experiences she encountered. This realization led her to create her website, www.LauraGrier.com, where she showcases her travel and fine art photography, providing a behind-the-scenes look into her work and personal narratives. Her ability to infuse her storytelling with a chic and vibrant perspective has made her a respected international photographer.
One of Laura's most notable projects has been her collaboration with National Geographic's artisan catalog, where she photographs global artisans practicing "Vanishing Arts" worldwide. In addition to her catalog work, she trains National Geographic's in-house photographers across the globe and documents their philanthropic projects focused on promoting happiness. Laura also shares her travel experiences through regular columns for publications like the Huffington Post and Venuelust.
Beyond her photography and writing, Laura is passionate about mentoring, women's education and empowerment, and making a positive impact through her work. She leads workshops and expeditions, inspiring and mentoring other photographers. Recently, she launched Andeana Hats, a passion project in partnership with Novica and the National Geographic Catalog. Through Andeana Hats, Laura aims to empower women and support global artisans in preserving their cultural traditions, enabling them to improve their livelihoods and lead their communities out of poverty.
