Episode Nine: Empatico’s Shining Teacher

Listen Later

Michael Dunlea & I at the Chocolate Room in Brooklyn, NY.
Why should teachers and students work in isolation when they can connect with one another? This episode is Part Two of a conversation I had with Empatico, a non-profit education organization helping to connect teachers across the country and the globe. Empatico was founded by Daniel Lubetzky who  also founded KIND Snack bars.
Last year, I had the pleasure of meeting Michael Dunlea, one of Empatico‘s shining teachers, to learn more about how being part of the organization has enriched his classroom.
Michael became a teacher to make students feel valued, become empowered, and live extraordinary lives. Even though he began his teaching career through an alternate route at the age of 37, he has proven “change is good”. He is a 16-year veteran teacher with numerous awards and recognitions. He was a 2012 New Jersey State Teacher of the Year finalist, he received the Presidential Award of Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching, and is National Board Certified in Early Childhood. He is a 2020 National Education Association (NEA) Global Learning Fellow and an Innovation Lab Schools American Ambassador.
Michael has served as an advisor to the New Jersey Department of Education on several councils and committees and is an active member of his union. He was the President of Alliance for A Living Ocean (ALO) from 2012-2019.  He is on the New Jersey Education Association’s State Elections Committee and serves as a New Jersey Education Association (NJEA) state delegate to the National Education Association (NEA) Representative Assembly.  Michael is a founder of Stafford Teachers And Residents Together (START), a non-profit helping to restore the Southern Jersey Coast after Hurricane Sandy.
He has a Bachelor’s Degree in History from Thomas Edison State College, a Masters Degree in Educational Technology from New Jersey City University, and is currently pursuing a second Masters Degree in Teacher Leadership at Mount Holyoke College.
He currently teaches 3rd grade in Tabernacle, NJ. And lives with his wife of 27 years and 3 amazing children in Southern New Jersey.
Michael was featured on the January 20th episode of NBC Nightly News with Lester Holt titled “Two Schools work together to build racial understanding on MLK Day”. Rehema Ellis, education journalist, showcased the work of Empatico through Michael’s partnership with Dr. Melissa Collins classroom in Memphis, Tennessee.
