Billed as the "Special Effects Movie Event of the Year," SPAWN seemed to have a lot going for it when it arrived in theaters in 1997. Based on a popular comic book that had been the centerpiece of a brand new company that revolutionized the comic industry in the early '90s, and arriving only a few months after the debut of a well-received HBO animated series, the film was also the first mainstream superhero movie with an African American hero in the lead.
