This course features a survey of the Old Testament in the English Bible. Emphasis is placed on the major themes, key scriptures, and major personalities of each book. Special attention is given to the revelation and promise of Christ in each book. Course Objectives: Students will be able to: â?¢ Identify basic outline of each book. â?¢ Identify the main message or theme(s) of each book. â?¢ Identify the revelation and promise of Christ in each book. LESSON 1: INTRODUCTION TO OLD TESTAMENT Why study the Old Testament? A. The Bible is Incomplete without the Old Testament. Both the Old and New Testaments make up the inspired Scriptures. The New Testament was never intended to replace the Old Testament. Instead, the New Testament was given to complement the Old Testament, to complete the story. 1. The Old Testament prophesied of the coming of Jesus. 2. The New Testament is the sequel to the Old Testament origins, heir of its promises and fulfillment of the Old Testament prophecies. B. The Ministry of Christ is a Puzzle without the Old Testament. 1. Jesus said, "I am not sent but unto the lost sheep of the House of Israel" (Mt.15:24) In what sense was Jesus the promised Messiah long awaited by the Jews? Why did He have to die? READ: Isaiah 9:6-7 for an example of how the Old Testament answers the questions. Question: "What is the Pentateuch?" Answer: The Pentateuch is the first five books of the Bible that conservative Bible scholars believe were mostly written by Moses. Even though the books of the Pentateuch themselves do not clearly identify the author, there are many passages that attribute them to Moses or as being his words (Exodus 17:14,24:4â??7;Numbers 33:1â??2;Deuteronomy 31:9â??22). While there are some verses in the Pentateuch that would appear to have been added by someone later than Moses, for example,Deuteronomy 34:5â??8, which describes the death and burial of Moses, most if not all scholars attribute the majority of these books to Moses. Even if Joshua or someone else actually wrote the original manuscripts, the teaching and revelation can be traced from God through Moses.
