  • EP18: The Turning Points That Shape Us - Dr Dan van den Hoek

In this episode of Episodes of Life, Daniel sits down with Dr Dan van den Hoek to talk about mental toughness, resilience and the experiences that have shaped his life.

Dan is an academic and researcher working in sport and exercise science, with a growing focus on mental toughness and human performance. But his own experiences have taught him just as much about resilience as his research.

From losing his older brother to cancer at just three years old, to surviving a serious drink-driving accident at 18, and later going through the breakdown of his marriage, Dan has faced some incredibly difficult turning points.

We talk about guilt, shame, taking responsibility for our mistakes and why so many of us struggle to admit when we're not okay.

We also explore whether resilience can be trained, the lessons Dan has learnt from completing an Ironman and working with para-athletes, and how sport can help us both physically and mentally.

I share some of my own experiences with grief and the different ways I've learnt to cope over the years, which led to a really interesting conversation about asking for help, recognising small wins and learning to move forward at your own pace.

A conversation about the difficult moments that shape us, the importance of the people around us and remembering just how far we've come.

We all have a story. You never know who might need to hear yours.

  • EP17: The Stories We Tell Ourselves - Joyce Santiago Savage

How much of who we are is shaped by the things we tell ourselves?

In this episode of Episodes of Life, Daniel sits down with Joyce Santiago Savage, a speaker, coach and author of Self-Talk to Success, for an honest conversation about identity, self-belief, negative self-talk and personal growth.

Joyce shares her journey of moving between different countries, how those experiences shaped her identity and the moment that completely changed the way she looked at herself and what she wanted out of life.

The conversation also takes a personal turn as Daniel opens up about his own experiences with grief, guilt and self-sabotage following the loss of his girlfriend Lydia. They explore how our past experiences can shape the way we see ourselves, why we often become our own worst critics and how difficult it can be to break free from those patterns.

One of the biggest takeaways from this conversation is how easily we can put ourselves down without even realising it, and how much of a difference it can make when we start challenging those thoughts.

An honest and thought-provoking conversation about accepting the past, changing the way we speak to ourselves and learning to back ourselves as we move forward.

  • EP16: The Man Who Refused to Give Up — Adam Flier

In this episode of Episodes of Life, Daniel sits down with Adam Flier — a man whose life has been shaped by trauma, chaos, rebuilding, and an unwavering determination to keep moving forward. Growing up in Western Sydney, Adam faced domestic violence, crime, and instability from a young age, setting the stage for years of struggle.

Life didn’t slow down. Adam lost a child, battled addiction, lived out of his car, and fought through multiple volatile relationships — all while trying to hold himself together. As he shares in the episode: “Mum and Dad split early… which caused me a considerable amount of trauma as I grew up.”

But what makes Adam’s story powerful is the rebuild. Today, he runs Men’s Walk & Talk on the Gold Coast, creating a space for men to open up, connect, and talk before things get too heavy.

A raw, honest conversation about trauma, resilience, and choosing to become the person you needed when you were younger.

  • EP14: Good Intentions Co. - Aaron Andre

With 20 T‑shirts and a simple idea, Aaron and his brother started Good Intentions — with no guarantee anyone would buy what they were making. For almost three years they didn’t take a wage. They worked other jobs, spent weekends at markets, reinvested every dollar, and just kept showing up.

In this episode of Episodes of Life, Aaron shares the real story behind building a clothing brand from nothing: the self‑doubt, the disagreements, the sacrifices, and the moments where you wonder if it’s worth continuing. We talk about getting out of your own way, giving up habits that no longer serve you, becoming comfortable with being uncomfortable, and why you don’t need everything figured out before you start.

A conversation about consistency, community, and the power of showing up — even when you’re not sure it’s working.
