Between the 7th of September 1940 and the 11th of May 1941, the Nazis carried out what was at the time the largest aerial bombardment in military history. The Blitz or Blitzkrieg targeted all important industrial cities in the UK with thousands of tonnes of bombs raining down on civilians for 9 months, day and night, none stop, resulting in 43,000 fatalities.
