August 14 marks the day in 1945 when President Truman announced Japan’s surrender in World War II. The war was over, but now Japan had to be rebuilt, including changes to the constitution.  There was one little-remarked provision that was unheard of in Japan, and to this day goes beyond even the U.S. Constitution. Women were given equal rights with men. How did that happen?  A woman on the drafting committee of course.
