Jesus is equal with the Father. To the religious leaders, no one was equal with God. But if there had to be someone close to it, it would have been them. Then Jesus comes along and tells them they aren't even trying to be right with God. Jesus makes it clear to them and to us there is only one way to heaven and its all about Himself.
