Can Christians swear to God? In this episode, we examine what Scripture teaches about lawful oaths and vows—when they are permitted, why they are serious, and how they must be made truthfully and reverently before God. We also consider the importance of keeping our promises, the danger of rash and sinful vows, and historical abuses of vows within the Roman Catholic Church that the Reformers sought to correct.

In Part 2 of our discussion on worship, we take a deeper look at the Regulative Principle of Worship and what Scripture teaches about how God is to be worshiped. Building on our previous episode, we explore the biblical elements of corporate worship in greater detail and address practical questions about worship.

Does God care how we worship Him? Absolutely. In this episode, we examine why good intentions are not enough, God Himself determines how He is to be worshiped (Regulative Principle of Worship). We discuss the biblical elements of corporate worship. We also discuss the Christian Sabbath, and how we must set apart the Lord’s Day for the worship of God.

What freedom has Christ purchased for His people, and who has the right to bind the Christian conscience? In this episode, we explore Christian liberty and liberty of conscience—our freedom from the guilt and dominion of sin, the liberty we enjoy under the gospel, and the foundational truth that God alone is Lord of the conscience. We also consider the dangers of legalism, which binds the conscience where God has not spoken, and the misuse of Christian liberty, which turns our freedom in Christ into an excuse for sin.

In this episode, we study Chapter 20, “Of the Gospel, and of the Extent of the Grace Thereof.” Interestingly, this chapter appears in both the Savoy Declaration and the 1689 London Baptist Confession, but not in the Westminster Confession of Faith. The Congregationalists believed the subject of the gospel was too important to leave merely implicit, so they added an entire chapter devoted to its necessity, its spread among the nations, and the work of the Holy Spirit in bringing sinners to Christ. The Baptists later retained this addition in the 1689 Confession.

In this episode, we examine Chapter 19 of the Reformed Confessions concerning the Law of God. If Christians are saved by grace and not by works, why should we still obey God’s law? We consider the distinction between the moral, ceremonial, and judicial laws, the relationship between law and gospel, and how God’s law continues to expose sin, restrain evil, and guide believers in a life of grateful obedience.

In this episode, we study Chapter 18 of the Reformed Confessions on the Assurance of Salvation. Can a Christian truly know that he or she is saved? Can we know with certainty that we belong to Christ? Can a true Christian struggle with assurance?
We consider the biblical foundation of assurance, the difference between true and false assurance, and how genuine assurance rests upon the promises of God in the gospel, the evidences of fruit in our lives, and the testimony of the Holy Spirit. We also examine why true believers may struggle with assurance—and how assurance can be strengthened, weakened, and restored through the ordinary means of grace.

In this episode, we consider the doctrine of the Perseverance of the Saints. Can a true Christian ever lose their salvation? We explore the biblical promise that those whom God has saved and united to Christ will never finally fall away. Though believers may fall into serious sin, experience seasons of weakness, and face powerful temptations, God preserves His people by His grace and power. We also make an important distinction between perseverance of the saints and assurance of salvation.

In this episode of Equip the Saints, we explore Chapter 16, “Of Good Works.” What makes a work truly good? Can our good works earn God’s favor or contribute to our salvation? And if even our best works are imperfect, how can God be pleased with them? We examine how good works flow from true faith, are commanded by God, and are accepted and rewarded through Christ alone.

What is true biblical repentance? Is repentance necessary for salvation? How does repentance differ from mere guilt or remorse? Does repentance earn God’s forgiveness? In this episode, we explore Chapter 15 about the Doctrine of Repentance. We also examine the revisions and differences between the Westminster Confession, the Savoy Declaration, and the Second London Baptist Confession on the doctrine of repentance unto life.
