A historic church in Alexandria, Virginia is removing plaques commemorating George Washington and Robert E. Lee that have been on either side of the church’s altar since 1870. Senior Warden of Christ Church Emily Bryan reportedly told the congregation that "the plaques in our sanctuary make some in our presence feel unsafe or unwelcome" but they "will stay very prominently be displayed, in a place that will better tell our history."
