Essay writing: You may have hated it in school. (I sometimes did.) However, a number of prominent novelists have also been prolific essayists, and some acclaimed writers are (gasp!) known primarily for their essays! I discuss some of the many benefits of essay writing, and propose that we view essay writing as a genre rather than a dreaded academic exercise.
