The book of Esther is written about the Jewish people living in Persia. The book reads like a novel, and no one has been able to determine its author. The scroll of Esther was read every year to celebrate the feast of Purim, still a favorite holiday today. Only two books in the Bible are named after women: Esther and Ruth. The book of Esther was probably included in the Canon because it is the only Old Testament scroll about the Jewish people whose ancestors had been taken captive by the Babylonians and later ruled by the Persians, but who chose to remain in Persia even when freed.
