Not just to know about him. Not simply to hold correct theological positions or recite doctrinal statements with confidence. But to actually know him, to enjoy friendship with him, to converse with the Creator of the universe as naturally as breathing. That is not a poetic exaggeration. It is genuinely hardwired into your very nature.

What does it mean to live a good life?

We all have our answers and we’ve all heard the answers of the world even if we don’t recognize them. Things like, follow your heart, protect your peace, build your brand, and so forth. But in Matthew 5, Jesus turns this question upside down.

This week we kicked off our new series, Kingdom Come, diving into the Sermon on the Mount in Matthew 5, 6, and 7. Jesus is not offering good advice or life hacks. He is a king describing his kingdom, and He is inviting you into it. Not just through the door of salvation, but all the way into the fullness of life under his reign.

This Sunday we closed out our series "The Life We're Looking For" with a simple yet deep truth: the will of God is not a mystery buried on some treasure map. It is standing right in front of you. It is the person down the hall, across the office, or on the other end of a text you have been putting off sending.

Usually, when asking someone "how are you?" we aren't really expecting an answer that isn't "fine", "good", or "great". We aren't wanting a real answer. We have become remarkably skilled at being present without being known.

But what if the life we have been searching for has been hiding behind the very walls we built to protect ourselves?

If we’re honest with ourselves, we’ve all lost time to worry. Whether it’s relational worry, financial, school or work related.  Something causes us to lose sleep or lose focus.

Jesus knew we’d worry and in Matthew 6:25-34, He speaks directly to our worry, fear, and anxiety.

There's something that most of us have experienced but rarely talk about. You worked hard for something, you get it, and for a little while it was everything you hoped it would be. Then Thursday came. The satisfaction began to leak. The promotion, the trip, the relationship, the house, the goal you crossed off the list. None of it was bad, and you were genuinely grateful. But eventually, without warning, the ache returned. 

You were thirsty again.

Loving people who love you? Easy. Loving people who give you a gift, encourages you, or supports you? No brainer. It flows easily, naturally, almost automatically. Anyone can do that. The real question, the one that cuts to the heart of what it means to follow Jesus, is what happens when love becomes difficult.

Because it will. If you stay anywhere long enough, love will eventually cost you something.

There is a question that has the power to reshape the entire trajectory of a life. It is not complicated. 

The question is simply this: God, what have you entrusted to me, and how can I use it for your kingdom?

We as humans try to take something big like death and make it smaller. Softer. Manageable. Something that can fit inside a single sentence spoken to a grieving friend or relative.

But death never actually gets smaller. And Christianity has never once asked you to pretend that it does.
