Publisher's Summary:
Set in the same world as the New York Times best-selling Parasol Protectorate, this best-selling young adult steampunk series debut is filled with all the saucy adventure and droll humor Gail Carriger's legions of fans have come to adore.
Fourteen-year-old Sophronia is a great trial to her poor mother. Sophronia is more interested in dismantling clocks and climbing trees than proper manners - and the family can only hope that company never sees her atrocious curtsy. Mrs. Temminnick is desperate for her daughter to become a proper lady. So she enrolls Sophronia in Mademoiselle Geraldine's Finishing Academy for Young Ladies of Quality.
But Sophronia soon realizes the school is not quite what her mother might have hoped. At Mademoiselle Geraldine's, young ladies learn to finish...everything. Certainly, they learn the fine arts of dance, dress, and etiquette, but they also learn to deal out death, diversion, and espionage - in the politest possible ways, of course. Sophronia and her friends are in for a rousing first year's education.

Girl-Powered Stempunk!
Great Steampunk story! Harry Potter meets James Bond / Mata Hari.
Mischievous teen is enrolled in a "finishing" school. What I especially loved was the strong girl friendships that developed and were depicted. Typical steampunk elements are present, but the school to develop future assassins and spys are a fun twist! Is YA friendly, but not only a teen's read. Satisfying arc and ending, sets up characters for future adventures.
I've been reading many steampunk stories lately..... and although I like the genre, some stories seem a little flat or simplistic. I was hesitant to add the supernatural element into the mix (vampires & werewolves). But this was subtle, balanced and perfectly polished. I'm completely won over and will continue on with this series.
Young adult women's guide to survival in school
I'm not a young adult but enjoy reading what they consider "theirs". But, I started the book thinking the story would be describing the how and what of a spy school for young women, not so. The plot seemed to be (from my senior adult perspective) "how to survive other young women's evil/vicious intents in a school type environment" (and I remember those intents at that age!). I enjoyed the author's use of an Victorian-age setting with fantasy and magic complete with were-wolves, wizards, and vampires. One of the funniest characters was a teacher who wore nun's clothing but wasn't a nun. Another tickle to me was the amount of time to produce the "proper curtsey" that seemed like it was equivalent to some "required" courses in high school.
Start to a good, strong YA series. Not the Parasol Protectorate but part of the same universe.
As published on my Goodreads account: Having read three of the series so far I can review this book with a little more perspective than others might have. This is a YA series, if you go into it expecting it to be a YA series written for adults and not young adults, you're likely to be disappointed. This is not the Parasol Protectorate series, which was written for adults but gained young adult readers. That said, the first book doesn't seem to quite know how to write to this audience (it does get better as the series progresses).
