Every time there's an EV fire, the same statistic shows up in the coverage — 25 fires per 100,000 EVs. Far safer than gas cars. I've spent over a year saying that number is garbage. Now NIST agrees.
NIST Technical Note 2365 is the most serious attempt yet to quantify the lithium-ion battery fire problem in the United States. What they found is alarming — not just because of how bad the problem is, but because of how little of it we're actually capturing.
The data we've been relying on isn't fire data. It's news coverage. And those are very different things.
