Evacuation is the most dangerous event in preparedness for a family, the most impactful and life changing. Have a plan - a well rehearsed plan that you and your family understand. Evacuations are mandatory or voluntary, immediate or slow burn and they happen at the most inconvenient of times. The only practical advice is to have an evacuation plan as part of your trifecta of preparedness plans.
If the kids are at school, what does the school board plan to do with them in an evacuation? Normally, there are only sufficient school buses for 50% of the kids - how are the rest leaving the area? Where will they be taken? Where is your family to meet and move to the planned destination? 
Trying to communicate after the event is triggered is a challenge, networks will be overloaded.
A plan means no need to text family members, in the chaos of the event, everyone knows their responsibility and they are executing a well understood plan - while everyone else is madly texting family and friends to find out.
