Evacuations are the most dangerous emergency event a family can experience, having a plan that is well built and understood by all family members is critical. We outline the steps to create a plan in detail, what to consider and a myriad of details.
You are responsible to evacuate yourself and those for whom you're responsible. It is not the government's job to do so, their capacity is exceptionally limited. Relying on the public sector for this in times of threat is not a plan.
Having a destination confirmed first, in a place of peace where you can begin the reconstruction of your life is critical. The Motel 6 or a public shelter are not ideal destinations. 
Take the time to construct a plan, to be ready to execute when others are trying to figure out what to do. Mandatory evacuations create parking lots - go early, go prepared.
