When Emma Stone and her character devour the spectacular cake full of symbolism and double readings of Poor Creatures in a volcanic and, dare I say, almost ravenous manner, Jesse Plemons confronts his omnipresence, his always being there, even when he is almost gone, in Kinds of Kindness on Afdah Movies. This film's way of guiding us from one disturbing moment to the next, from one intrigue to the next, with the sinister joy that usually presides over Lanthimos's black humor, has always reminded me of Bach's toccata and fugue in D minor. For me, this work is most effective when Filippou plays a creative traveling companion. The boss's presents to his subordinate are examples of the ends of kindness in action.
