The spirit of a man is the lamp of the LORD, searching out his inmost being. — Proverbs 20:27
The spirit of man is the lamp of the Lord. Conscience is God's candle in the soul, searching the hidden places. When the woman caught in adultery stood before Jesus, her accusers were convicted by their own consciences and slipped away one by one. Adam and Eve hid when they heard God walking in the garden — their consciences woke up. If we know the right thing and don't do it, it's sin.
