Christ Himself bore our sins in His body on the tree, so that we, being dead to sin, might live to righteousness. Notice the order: dead to sin first, then living to righteousness. You don't die to sin by trying to live righteously. You're united with Christ in His death, and because you died with Him, you're freed from sin's dominion. The new life flows from the death.
