SHOW NOTES:

  • An Analysis of Recent Layoffs
  • 2023 Tech Layoff Tracker
  • From diversity and inclusion to adversity and expulsion
  • The five stages of grief

LAYOFFS ARE NEVER FUN, AND THEY HAVE RIPPLE EFFECTS

  • Hiring tends to happen in waves, and layoffs happen in blasts
  • Sometimes layoffs happen for solid reasons, and sometimes for emotional reasons

HOW TO NAVIGATE A LAYOFF, OR BEING AROUND AFTER A LAYOFF

  • Eventually, everybody gets fired - whether they should or not
  • Try not to make it too emotional, which is initially difficult
  • Companies never really take ownership, but they can be compassionate
  • Allow yourself to go through the grieving process
  • Decide if you still want to stay in the tech industry
  • Stay active in life - get up, find a routine, stay healthy, make a plan each day
  • Begin looking while you have financial buffers
  • Find something creative - build things
  • Stay active with your skills - volunteer, side projects, etc.
  • Stay active with your networks
  • At some point, be realistic - family needs, sunk costs, titles, etc.
