It’s 2022, and ignorance is not bliss, not any longer. As people who do not know Jada Pickett-Smith, Will Smith and Chris Rock personally, we critique Chris’ bad joke and the smackdown that quickly followed.
Chris Rock joked about Jada Pinkett-Smith starring in "G.I. Jane 2" apparently because her head is shaved. Will Smith then walked to the stage and slapped Chris Rock.
Once seated he (Will Smith) yelled at Rock "Keep my wife’s name out of your fucking mouth!”
We talk about insults and willful ignorance masquerading as humor, and whether violence can ever be justified. We talk about this thing that happens all the time where women get decentred from their issues when men enter the picture. We talk about men needing a therapy & support group for the healing they’re clearly in need of. Then, there’s the Lupita memes 😂😂
The part of Will’s speech that we referenced (towards the end of the podcast):
“Denzel [Washington] said to me a few minutes ago, he said, ‘At your highest moment, that’s when the devil comes for you… I want to apologize to the Academy, I want to apologize to my fellow nominees. This is a beautiful moment and I’m not crying for winning an award. It’s not about winning an award for me. It’s about being able to shine a light on all of the people … Art imitates life. I look like the crazy father just like they said … just like they said about Richard Williams. Love will make you do crazy things.”
