• I’ve been successful in my career, I have the opportunity to give my kids things they did not have – partially because of technologies that didn’t exist, partially time and attention, going places and doing things. It’s in our nature to want to share that, to give it to our kids, to have our children have a better life than we had and to avoid some of the hard work and pain that we had to go through. But, it’s that hard work that made us who we are. We missed meals and we struggled, when I first built my businesses I didn’t know where my next pay cheque was coming from and there was risk and sleepless nights. We want to avoid this for our kids because we love them, but there’s this balance between loving them and making them independent, well-functioning members of society and the pendulum swings back and forth. Unfortunately for society it has swung so far to the ‘make things easy for them, coddle them, bubble-wrap them’ that it has produced a generation of kids who can’t figure stuff out and have never had difficulty.
• We need to make things more difficult. If you touched the stove when you were little and it was hot you learned never to touch the stove again. If you did something stupid you either got your butt paddled, you got in trouble or you got a small scar for it and you learned your lesson, you failed a test, that was on you. Kids need to stand on their own much earlier and make little mistakes before they grow into big mistakes.

Joe Templin has led an eclectic life.
As one of six kids (the only normal one, he insists) growing up in a small town and spending time on the family farm, Joe’s parents (John and Barb) instilled a love of learning, the outdoors, and a healthy disrespect for authority while still simultaneously embracing traditional values of hard work and “love thy neighbour but mind your own dang business.”  This is Joe’s foundation.
He was severely asthmatic but through his work ethic and love of challenge has become a martial artist and ultra distance runner.  He had a speech impediment but has built a career around communicating.  This habit of overcoming limitations is a theme in his life and his writings.
Joe has three hooligans (Danny, Liam, and Colin) and is a very proud member of the Pi Kappa Phi Fraternity, having served multiple times as President of his local Foundation and Chapter Advisor.  He has also served on the local, State, and National levels for NAIFA, is a Cubmaster (worst one ever if you ask his boys), and is involved with his local Autism Society.  Serving others is important to Joe, because of how his parents raised him.
