  • Less Stress Thanksgiving Prep

Thanksgiving is meant to be a time of gratitude, connection, and gathering—but sometimes the planning, shopping, cooking, cleaning, and expectations can leave us feeling anything but thankful.

In this episode of Everyday Holiday Home, we're talking about how to prepare for Thanksgiving with less stress and more intention. Instead of chasing the picture-perfect holiday, let's make room for what really matters: a welcoming home, a meaningful meal, and time with the people we love.

We'll look at Thanksgiving preparation through the three pillars of Everyday Holiday Home:

Stewardship — Making thoughtful decisions with our time, money, energy, and resources. We'll talk about planning ahead, simplifying the menu, using what we have, and spreading out the work so everything doesn't fall on one day.

Sanctuary — Creating a peaceful atmosphere without feeling the need to make every corner of the house perfect. Your home doesn't have to look like a magazine to be a place of welcome and rest.

Hospitality — Remembering that hospitality is about people, not performance. It's about making room for connection, sharing the work, and creating moments that matter more than a perfectly executed meal.

  • Front Yard Community

Front Yard Community: Building a Life Together, One Neighbor at a Time

We live closer to one another than ever, yet meaningful, face-to-face community can feel surprisingly difficult to cultivate. In this episode of Everyday Holiday Home, we're exploring what it means to build genuine relationships with the people right outside our front doors.

From creating simple opportunities for connection on Halloween to extending kindness at Thanksgiving and making room for others at Christmas, we'll talk about practical ways to practice hospitality without adding unnecessary pressure to an already busy season.

We'll also talk honestly about what happens when invitations go unanswered, gatherings don't turn out as planned, or community feels harder to build than we expected.

And I'll share a little about my own journey as I begin the Come Away days—an opportunity to open my home as a quiet place for women to rest, read, pray, and be still. It's one small way I'm learning to create space for others while continuing to learn what community and hospitality look like in my own life.

Because community doesn't have to begin with a big event. Sometimes it begins with a conversation, a cup of coffee, a plate of cookies, or simply opening the front door.

Here are FIVE natural, low-pressure conversation starters designed to build rapport and gently let someone know you’re approachable and available: Make them your own...

    1. The Observation & Soft Check-In

"I feel like it's been such a whirlwind week around here. How are things going on your end?"

Why it works: It acknowledges shared environment/stress without being intrusive, giving them room to answer with a simple "good" or open up if they're having a tough time.

    1. The Shared Environment Anchor

"I realized we pass each other almost every day and I rarely get to say more than hello! How has your week been treating you?"

Why it works: It calls out the casual pattern warmly and signals that you'd welcome a slightly longer, friendly exchange.

    1. The Low-Stakes Curiosity Question

"I’m taking a quick break to reset—how’s your day going so far? Anything good happening this week?"

Why it works: Framing it around taking a pause gives them permission to slow down for a minute, and focusing on "anything good" keeps the tone positive while opening the door to talk.

    1. The Helpful Neighborhood/Workplace Check-In

"I was just thinking about how fast things move around here. If you ever need a quick hand with anything—or just a break to vent—let me know!"

Why it works: Direct and clear. It explicitly offers a supportive ear without forcing a deep conversation on the spot.

    1. The Gentle Open-Door Follow-Up

"You looked like you were in the zone earlier! Hope everything’s going smoothly with you today. My door [or inbox/porch] is always open if you ever want to grab a quick coffee or chat."

Why it works: It validates that they might be busy or stressed while making a zero-pressure invitation for future connection.

FALL SIMMER POTS are a simple way to fill your home with cozy, natural seasonal scents. Combine your ingredients in a pot on the stove or in a small slow cooker, cover with water (about 1–2 inches above the ingredients), and bring to a simmer.

    • Stovetop Instructions: Bring to a gentle boil, then turn the heat down to the lowest setting to simmer uncovered.
    • Crock Pot Instructions: Set your slow cooker to High uncovered, or cover until hot and then remove the lid so the aroma fills the room.

    1. Classic Warm Cider & Spice

    • Ingredients: 1 sliced orange, 3–4 cinnamon sticks, 1 tablespoon whole cloves, 1 tablespoon whole allspice, 2 star anise.
    • Best For: A classic holiday atmosphere with sweet citrus and heavy spice.

    2. Autumn Harvest Apple & Cranberry

    • Ingredients: 1 sliced apple (or leftover peels/cores), 1 cup fresh or frozen cranberries, 1 sliced lemon, 2 cinnamon sticks, 1 sprig fresh rosemary.
    • Best For: A bright, fruity scent balanced by earthy herbs.

    3. Country Kitchen Vanilla Pumpkin

    • Ingredients: 1 tablespoon pure vanilla extract (or 1 vanilla bean pod), 2 tablespoons pumpkin pie spice, 3 cinnamon sticks, 1 sliced orange, 1 teaspoon whole cloves.
    • Best For: A rich, warm bakery-inspired aroma.

    4. Rustic Woodland Pine & Citrus

    • Ingredients: 2 sprigs fresh pine or cedar branches, 1 sliced lemon, 1 sliced orange, 1 bay leaf, 1 tablespoon whole peppercorns, 1 cinnamon stick.
    • Best For: A crisp, fresh outdoorsy scent perfect for late fall.

    Water Maintenance & Recipe Lifespan

    • Checking & Top-Off Frequency: Check the water level every 30 to 45 minutes on the stovetop (or every 1 to 2 hours in a slow cooker). Never let the pot run dry, as scorched ingredients will burn and ruin the scent. Always add hot water to maintain the simmer.
    • How Long Each Batch Lasts: A single batch can be reused for 2 to 4 days.
    • Storage & Safety: Turn off the heat or unplug the slow cooker when leaving home or going to bed. Allow the pot to cool completely, cover it, and store it in the refrigerator overnight. Reheat it the next day and add fresh water as needed. Once the fruit turns mushy or loses its fragrance, discard the batch.
