Everyone needs a fire escape plan

Listen Later

Every second counts during a fire and having a clear exit strategy saves lives —whether you’re at home, a hotel, or a business. Knowing how fast fires can spread and preparing before an emergency strikes are the best ways to protect yourself and your family in an emergency.

Why is it important to have an exit strategy?

When a fire starts, you don’t have time to figure out what to do. You may have less than two or three minutes to escape. Fires spread fast because many household and business items are made with fast-burning plastics.

How do you prepare for a fire when traveling?

When you check into a hotel, find the two closest exits or stairwells. Count how many doors are between your room and the nearest exit. If the hallway fills with smoke, you can crawl low along the floor and find your way out by counting the doors.

Is it safe to use the stairway during a fire?

Yes. Stairways are fire-rated, smoke protected spaces. Once you enter the stairway and close the door behind you, it takes time for fire or smoke to reach that area.

Where do I go during a fire if I can’t climb stairs?

Many office buildings and high-rises have an “area of refuge” inside the stairwell. It’s a protected space where people with mobility challenges can wait for help.
