This was the very first show that I ever did for the first independent internet radio station to have my show which was 15 years ago. It was a live show, which also had a chat box to talk to the listeners. It was wildly overwhelming.

Threads had been a great way to bring back a music community that I once loved on Twitter, and I really enjoyed the music challenges created by people. There are some music challenges that created a need for a deeper dive - I call it a rabbit hole. I was so fascinated with how Dag (the artist behind Fatal Obelisk) took me down a memory lane with his choices for instrumental music.

We hear music in so many places /spaces - we don’t make the connections or perhaps take time to make the connections to what we hear, and where it came from.

This episode, hopefully, will not be a one-off but will encourage more deep dives/ rabbit-hole discussions with others.

You can feel however you want to feel about Substack, but it has been a great place for me to post my content that is not just podcasts, but opinion pieces with receipts. If we constantly remove ourselves from spaces simply because horrible people profit from it, then why are you still using a cell phone where Congolese are being exploited to mine cobalt?

Next episode will be either Do You Bandcamp episode, or a series I am still trying to get off the ground called EatKS- Mixtape. Where you the listener send your playlist with commentary for me to present. I currently have 3 (?) in the queue. It’s different from what you typically expect of EatKS. But in truth, EatKS means Everything AND the Kitchen Sink sooo....

There is a series called from the vault where I pull out old shows from my archives, which are older shows that had been removed from the inter webs. I plan to add more of those. , The episodes include really cool discussions with other music and podcast peeps and of course, the most epic Joe Strummer Specials.

If you are a serious music lover and have not created a Bandcamp fan account, I highly recommend you do so. You can follow artists, record labels, and other music fans. When you follow indie record labels, your inbox will get slammed with new releases. It can be overwhelming to follow more than 5 indie record labels, but I assure you, it is worth it. You will no longer be the music fan stuck in your nostalgia, as it’s a great way to keep up with the music that is out there.

There Will Be Clash and Joe Strummer

Over the past decade yours truly would often do a Joe Strummer special once or twice a year.

I am not sure if I will do any more Joe Strummer specials, there is that possibility but I think I really want to unarchive my older specials so that they can exist.

Long time music pals of EatKS Christian D the frontman of Christian D and the Sinners and Adam Sewell frontman of Monster Voodoo Machine, Def Con Sound System, artist manager and writer joined me derailing conversations about The Clash and Joe Strummer.

We only had scratched the surface with talking about Joe Strummer, The Clash when it comes to the albums, the demos, the bootlegs, the boxset, our personal stories about the songs we love, some of the best books to read.

We didn’t talk about all the albums, all the bootlegs, all the books or all the boxsets.

What I hope that people will get from this is that Clash fans are unique because The Clash was one of the very few bands that could pull pub rock, reggae, first wave ska, dub, rockabilly, and even some new wave music fans. Is there one Clash fan that is right and another Clash fan that is wrong?

The best part of having your music digitally is that you can be surprised, take a trip down memory lane, and be amused with what nonsense will happen when you put you music library on shuffle.

When I say music library, I mean your CD’s you ripped, the digital download codes from the records you bought, the digital tracks you bought from Bandcamp or maybe you did the dropbox thingy with your music pals and swapped music.

A start of a new series perhaps? I do love Bandcamp and Bandcamp has done so much for artists during these trying times with COVID. Each month this year they waived their fees on a Friday so that the artists and labels get 100% of the money. They plan to continue this through 2021.

With my grassroots word of mouth #NoPantsRecordStoreShopping hashtag a very tiny community of music junkies post their favourite bands that they have found and it is a great rabbit hole of music genres. Hashtags aren’t just about trends, they are also search engines.

A lot of these picks are from 2020 so despite 2020 being a crappy year for everything else, some killer music was still put out. You might say that is a glass half full, I see a glass that can always be filled. This is an EatKS show that solely focuses on bands that have a bandcamp page for music fans to get their music from whether it be in a digital or physical form is not the point. Its that music fans have access to a better way to support a band/artist/record label.

EatKS (Everything and the Kitchen Sink) shows are a mix of old, new, global, and Bandcamp music all across the genres, sub-genres, and weird fusions. Do You Even Bandcamp Bro is a series where I solely focus on Bandcamp artists. I have dabbled with the idea of other themed shows, such as deeper cuts, which focus on less well-known songs from an album. (that is still a possibility)

I am so excited to finally take a moment, reflect, regroup and realize that this show, EatKS (the short form for Everything and the Kitchen Sink), needed to see the light of day again. For new listeners, this show started back in 2011, and it’s been a roller coaster of a ride. Even in the DIY scene, gatekeeping has always been a reality. I am a person who believes that you don’t stay quiet when there is xenophobia in the DIY circles. I will call out microaggressions and misogyny, sometimes publicly and sometimes behind closed doors, but when you do that, it means you also have to burn those bridges/connections.

I do realize that in 2020, I burned many bridges with other radio hosts, music bloggers, music sites and musicians because their allyship with certain marginalized groups or causes was just mere social bandwagoning only when it didn’t affect them, their friends, their networks were comfortable to speak out.

EatKS has been 100% DIY with a few kind supporters to help offset some of the costs to keep the lights on this nonsense. I am forever grateful to those supporters and also the supporters that share the show on their social media platforms. I can’t quit this because I love music and I love sharing my love of music with you. It’s like me creating a mixtape of bands for you.
